Music To Go, Joe Savage On Coronavirus
Fort Worth musician Joe Savage takes a few minutes to talk with To Go about the impact of COVID-19 has had on him and the music business. Music To Go might just be a term to remember as patio and driveway shows join private parties and venue concerts!
Savage talks about his three-week isolation during the early days of the coronavirus as he struggled with the loneliness. Emerging after 21-days inside his apartment, Savage had to find a way to make a living using his musical skills. In a last-ditch effort to earn enough money for rent, Savage wrote a letter and convinced his management company to hire him for patio gigs at their three complexes.
The conversation starts easy enough, talking about Savage’s career that includes teaching for Fort Worth Independent School District, working as a stagehand, and of course, as a singer/songwriter. As Savage and I got to know one another before the interview, I shared that a former neighbor had been a Savage. I have always gotten a kick out of being able to say that. Joe asked a couple of questions and confirmed that they are not part of his Savage family.
In discovering his shortage of funds, Savage has been able to grow his client list and change the makeup thanks in part to COVID-19. As the conversation went, Savage shared that in 2018, he had taken a trip to Spain to walk the Camino de Santiago, a 500-mile journey. He played music along the six-week-long route and made new friends. We discussed how COVID-19 would impact his 2021 plans to walk the Camino again and how those same concerns were impacting the music scene here and across the country.
Savage is an exciting musician with a vibrant voice that I think does justice to Johnny Cash. Maybe one day we will see his name on bigger stages… We talked for almost 90 minutes that night, and he did great, but as the interview went on, his nerves came out a little under the lights. We talked more off-camera about when he plays. He said he doesn’t get the same nerves, that he is used to it, and two because there is comfort in the songs that he shares.
